Betty Farris Gore, affectionately known as Oma or BG, of Cumming and Dawsonville, passed
away peacefully on September 16, 2025 after a period of declining health. She was 97 years
old.
Betty was a feisty lady who fought through partial, and eventually total blindness due to macular
degeneration eye disease. She continued to overcome the difficulties of her limited sight for
over 30 years to retain her independence, and she was successful for almost the entirety of her
life.
Born and raised in Savannah, GA., Betty grew up in a large family and was the fourth of six
siblings. Betty’s low country roots ran deep, and she loved to visit her childhood home and the
old neighborhoods of Savannah whenever she had the opportunity. Her younger life was full of
beach time, shopping on Broad Street, Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations, and playing and roller
skating in the “Big Park.” She fondly reminisced on a different time where strong family,
community, and neighbor connections were valued and lasted a lifetime.
Betty was a very dependable and loyal employee for over 40 years to the Southern Bell
telephone companies, now known as AT&T. Beginning her career in Savannah as a switchboard
operator, she would eventually work in many different capacities which included teletype
operator, business office cashier, and even in the computer repair labs. After her long service
she retired in 1991 in order to spend more time with her family, especially her three grandsons.
Oma Betty was an instrumental figure in the raising of her grandsons, and served as a very
active and supporting grandmother. She attended countless baseball games and music
concerts and performances, as she was always there for “her boys.”
“BG” lived out her last years as a resident of Manor Lake Assisted Living Community in
Dawsonville. She created many strong friendships and relationships during her time at Manor
Lake, which included both her fellow residents as well as the staff and caretakers in the building.
Her favorite activities where sitting outside visiting with old friends and meeting new people,
sharing meals with her family, and watching her beloved Braves play.
Betty is survived by her daughter Kitsey Gore-Fischer of Cleveland, GA., and her three
grandsons: Max K. Fischer of Cleveland, Paul G. Fischer and wife Eleanor of Columbia, SC.,
and Glenn A. Fischer and wife Katherine of Cumming, GA. Her other pride and joys are her two
precious great granddaughters, Birdie Ann Fischer and Farris Louise Fischer of Columbia, SC.
Survived also by Dieter Fischer of Germany, niece Martha Ann Evans and Campbell MacInnes,
and her son Garrett Campbell of Savannah, nephew Jerry and Cindy Schramm, and their
children Catherine, Alec, and Emma Schramm of Atlanta. She is also survived by her favorite
family dog friends, Murphy, Josey, Hansi, and especially little Dewey.
Betty is predeceased by her parents, Paul G. Sr. and Martha Futch Farris of Savannah, GA.,
and her five siblings: Paul G. Farris Jr. of Savannah, Joseph T. Farris of Jacksonville, FL.,
Martha Farris Schramm and Jerry of Atlanta, Dorothy Farris Evans and Harold of Savannah,
and Freddy Farris of Atlanta, GA. Also preceding her in death are Kitsey’s father Max C. Gore of
Cumming, GA and her special son-in-law, Stan G. Leamon.
Betty’s family would like to give recognition and many special thanks to the caring,
compassionate, and respectful caregivers and staff at Manor Lake Assisted Living in
Dawsonville. The love and care they showed “BG” during her stay, and especially in her last
days is greatly appreciated. Also a special thanks to caregiver and family friend Natalya Hoose.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Betty’s name to St. Jude Hospital for Children at
www.stjude.org, or to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation at www.macular.org.
