Carl Smith, 101, of Atlanta, GA passed away Thursday, June 30 at Northside Forsyth Hospital. Carl was born in 1921; son of Zebulon and Lila Bost Smith of Statesville, NC. Carl graduated from Troutman High School; completing 12 years of perfect school attendance.

He attended Lees McRae and Lenoir Rhyne Colleges before enlisting in the Army for World War II. He served in the 339th Quartermaster Depot Company in the European Theatre starting in England before shipping off to the beaches of Normandy. He served in battles at Normandy, St Lo, and the Battle of the Bulge.

After the War ended, Carl went to the University of Miami where he was a member of the Epsilon-Beta Chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He earned a bachelor's degree in Chemistry. In 1952 he married Elizabeth “Lib” Barkley and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year. Until the day he passed, he always wanted to be holding her hand and have her by his side. They lived in various cites before settling in Atlanta. He was an active member in his Church and served on the Church Council.

Together they had six children who are all living in close proximity.

Carl worked with ITT Grinnell Fire Protection Services for 44 years. He also assisted in the design and managed installations of Nuclear Power Plants.

He was a man of honor, integrity and placed God and Family above all else. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved his country and was proud that every branch of his family tree was established in this country prior to the American Revolution. He was a true Southern gentleman.

He enjoyed preparing Sunday family dinners and gardening. He was a sports enthusiast and was an avid Atlanta Braves, Miami Hurricane and UGA fan.  Carl’s great love of the beach brought him relaxation and comfort. He was very physically and mentally active up until the last few months and lived to enjoy his 101st birthday celebration. He will be dearly missed! He definitely left this world a better place.

In addition to his wife, Elizabeth, he is survived by his children Gail Smith, Beth Burnette (Eddie), Jeff Smith (Cindi), Cindy Welsch (Greg), Steve Smith, and Chris Smith (Yuli), his grandchildren Angie Herman(Mike), James Trezza, Jon Welsch, Caroline Welsch, Jennifer Trezza, Tasha Reyes, his great-granddaughter Lily Claire, his brother Ray Smith (Pinkie) and many special nieces and nephews in NC, VA and GA.  Preceded in death are his parents Zeb and Lila Smith, brother William Smith (Barbara), sister Ann Brinkley (Bob), sister Lois Smith and many other family and friends.

Memorials may be made to St Paul Lutheran Church, 1950 Salisbury Rd Statesville NC 28677, or a charity of your choosing.
