Donald Sidney Todd was born on July 6, 1933, in Aberdeen, Washington, and grew up in the countryside south of Seattle. After graduating from Auburn High School in 1951, he went to work briefly at Boeing Aircraft Company, where he witnessed the maiden flight of the B-52 bomber — a moment that foreshadowed the remarkable aviation career that lay ahead. In February 1953, with his country engaged in the Korean War, Don joined the United States Air Force, embarking on what would become a twenty-year journey of service and sacrifice. Over a distinguished twenty-year military career, he flew as a flight engineer on the B-36 heavy bomber, completing extraordinary missions including a historic 42-hour non-stop flight across the continental United States — the longest ever flown by a B-36. He rose through the ranks as a supply officer, serving at postings across the country and overseas in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Germany, earning the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal among other commendations, and retiring in March 1973 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel — having entered the service as an Airman Basic and risen through the ranks entirely on merit and dedication.
In the years that followed, Don demonstrated the same determination that defined his military service. He earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration from Golden Gate University, built a career with Eastern Airlines, and later spent thirteen fulfilling years at Vitro Corporation supporting the U.S. Navy in Washington State — work that felt much like home after his Air Force years. In 1996, he moved to Georgia to be near family, buying a home in Snellville, and eventually settling in Cumming. Those who knew him remember a man of quiet strength and boundless curiosity — a devoted veteran, a passionate outdoors man who loved hunting and fishing, and a grandfather who cherished every adventure shared with his grandchildren.
Don passed away on March 26, 2026, at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy of service, perseverance, and love.
The son of Lewis Leroy Todd and Vivian Genevieve West Todd, Don was the second of five children. He was preceded in death by his brothers Eugene and Charles. He is survived by his sisters Priscilla and Sharon; his children David Todd (Gerri), Alesia Dehn (Tom) and Pamala Smith (Paul); his grandchildren Tim, Ashley (Rudy), Ryan (deceased), Kristin (Todd), Lucas and Sydney (Richie); his great-grandchildren Brantley, Channing and Grayson; and his many beloved nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on April 13th, 2026, at 11:00 AM, in the chapel of Ingram Funeral Home with Rev. Kathie Stasko officiating. The interment will follow at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA, at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
