Ernest B. Scott

Ernest B. Scott, age 89, of Cumming, passed away on July 22,2013 after a years long battle with Alzheimers disease.

Scott, as he was known to friends and loved ones, was born in Kentucky to German immigrant parents in 1923. He enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of seventeen and served in World War II. He earned numerous honors for his service in the U. S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1963. In 1952 he married Emmagene Scott, and in 1963, the couple moved to Georgia. Scott worked in water and sewer construction for decades, then turned his attentions to farming and horse training after retirement. Showing horses was a hobby he excelled at up until the last years of his life.

A reputation for hard work preceded Scott wherever he went, and he could dig a fence post hole faster than men half his age until he was well into his 80s. Though he had a gruff exterior, earning him the nickname "Grumps" from his grandchildren, he was always willing to lend a helping hand to those that were close to him, even when it required considerable personal sacrifice on his part. Scott was quick witted in spite of his lack of formal education, and could chime in with one-line aphorisms to shed light on or lighten up any situation he was faced with. His hard work and achievements throughout the course of his life will remain an inspiration to others; his generosity, quick-wit and understated tenderness will be especially missed.

Scott is survived by Emmagene Scott, his faithful and devoted wife of sixty years, sons Samuel Scott and Lee "Ben" Scott; daughter-in-law Ruth Sherry, and grandchildren Annie Kate Scott, Seth Scott and Emma Zoe Scott.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:00 am at the Byars Funeral Home Chapel.Interment of his Cremains with Military Honors will be held at the Georgia National Cemetey located in Canton, Georgia, at 12 noon.
