Georg Hessenius of Cumming, Georgia, passed away on Monday, July 28, 2025. Georg was born on December 31, 1947 in New York City, NY.
Georg attended Stony Brook University earning a Masters Degree in Computer Science. He then joined the Army, serving in the Vietnam War. Georg was a combat tracker who worked with a canine partner Jet who was sadly killed in combat. He was injured and honorably discharged, but not before earning five medals: Vietnam Campaign Medal W/Dvc 60, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal W/V Dvc, Army Commendation Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. He also earned a Purple Heart and two sharpshooter commendations for Rifle M-14 and Rifle M-16.
As a civilian, Georg worked as a computer programmer at AT&T for over 25 years. His career started in New York but eventually brought him to Atlanta, where he would eventually meet his wife Anna. They met late in life at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, becoming integral parts of each other's lives. Together they loved traveling, watching football games, and spending time with their families.
Georg is survived by his loving wife, Anna; his niece Tara Mitchell (Rick) and her children Thomas and Devon; his niece Megan Celio (Frank) and her children Madison, Kayla, and Landon; his niece Christel Lay (Christopher) and her children Jacob and Dylan; his nephew Sean Discoll (Sarah); and his cousins Linda Sallie (Brian), Mary Lynch (Rick), and Ed Guiness (Linda); his daughter-in-law Karen Adams (Kenny); his granddaughter Starr Smallwood (John and her children Emma and Brooks; his grandson Kyle Lightsey (Randi Lea) and his children Reagan and Parker; his grandson Bryan Lightsey and his children Emery and Bryce; his grandson Justin; his grandson Carson Adams (Heather).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Virginia Hessenius, his sisters and brother-in-laws Gretchen and Tony Tamilio and Maria and John Driscoll.
