Joseph "J.M." Monroe Burt, Jr.

Joseph "J.M." Monroe Burt, 96, of Milton, died on May 5, 2025, at Lotus Village. Born December 7, 1928, he was the son of Joseph Montaroe Burt and Dosha Mae Sams. J.M. grew up in Dawsonville GA, attended North Georgia College and served in the U.S. Air Force as Airman First Class stationed on the Aleutian Islands AK during WWII. After his service, J.M. worked at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation for 37 years retiring as a manager in the electrical systems department.

He was an involved member of Macedonia Methodist Church for 60 years. His on pitch and melodious voice was integral to the Macedonia choir, men’s quartet, and Holbrook Campground singers. J.M. enjoyed driving his blue Ford tractor on his beautiful Twin Springs Farm, offering sweet feed to his prized Black Angus cattle and cultivating a garden full of fresh vegetables and juicy melons. He was an accomplished woodworker who made chairs and cabinets for his family. At 80 years old, he surprised his family & friends by self-publishing his first and only adventure novel, God Fearing Criminals. The book was loosely based on his upbringing in a family of staunch Baptists renowned for their moonshining prowess.

J.M. was an avid reader, great conversationalist, master coffee maker, and loyal GA Bulldog fan. He was a significant part of the Masonic Ducktown Lodge and faithfully participated in their golf tournament fundraisers. His zest for life took him and his wife on many adventures from camping at Long Hollow campground and boating on Lake Lanier to Russia, England, Germany, and Israel. He was baptized in the Jordan River (Israel) by his second son. Yet, J.M. relished simple pleasures like sitting in the warm sunshine, reading the newspaper, and eating homemade pound cake.

We are thankful and inspired by his life and carry his spirit with us. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Nettie Marie Kent Burt, his sons Jonathan Burt of Milton GA and Noel (Beth) Burt of Henderson NC; his daughter, Karen Missy (Hank) McCue of Woodstock GA. Three beloved grandchildren are part of his legacy: Jordan McCue of Kennesaw GA, Hannah Burt of Berea KY and Jacob Burt of Raleigh NC. Also, one sister Dora Arrendale of Dawsonville GA and one brother-in-law Michael (Kathy) Kent of Jasper GA; and many nieces and nephews.

All are invited to a memorial service on Friday May 9, 2025 at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming. Family will receive guests at 10:00am with the service at 11:00am. A private interment with the Masonic Rites will be conducted at a later time. J.M.’s final resting place will be in Macedonia Church cemetery.
