Joanne Gibson, 91, of Dunwoody passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2024. She was proceeded in death by her husband James William Gibson. She is survived by her children, Jim Gibson, Dianne (Bo) Hiers and Doug (Seng) Gibson and grandchildren Matt (Whitney) Hiers, Melissa Hiers Brady, Taylor Gibson and Luke Gibson and one Great grandchild, Fletcher Hiers.
Joanne was born in Cumming, GA where she attended high school and worked at the movie theater and a jewelry store. She was an only child but spent many hours with her cousins in Cumming.
Joanne had a long career with Internal Revenue Service and was elected Vice President of the Federal Employees Union. She later went on to have many promotions in Management at IRS. When she retired she was awarded the Albert Gallatin award, the Department of Treasury’s highest honor for her service.
She was married to James for 52 years until his passing in 2003. Although Joanne was an only child, James came from a large family and she enjoyed her brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws and the many nieces and nephews that came with that.
James began his career at Southern Railroad and later founded his own railroad supply and signal company, SERRMIT in 1969. The family moved from Cumming, GA to Chamblee, GA in the late 50s and moved from Chamblee to Sandy Springs in the early 70s. After James death, Joanne moved to Dunwoody.
Joanne loved to decorate her home for every holiday. She proudly displayed flags on the street for the 4th of July, almost life size bunnies were out for Easter and loved Halloween and Christmas decorating.
She was a Christian and especially loved church hymns and had a collection of many antique hymnals. In her later years she enjoyed visiting Chamblee First Methodist, with Dianne and Bo, when she was in good health.
Joanne enjoyed travel and she and James enjoyed many wonderful trips after they retired. She loved bright colorful clothes and matching jewelry. She also loved having her nails, hair and makeup done.
She had a wonderful, long life full of family and friends. She helped create many memories that will live on in all that knew her.
