John Paul (Jack) Manton

John Paul "Jack" Manton, 81, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Jack’s life was defined by his deep faith, unwavering dedication to family, and the genuine relationships he built over a lifetime.

Born on August 9, 1943, Jack was a standout athlete at Druid Hills High School before attending Mercer University, where he earned his law degree. A gifted dual-sport athlete, he played basketball and baseball for Mercer and was later inducted into the Mercer Athletic Hall of Fame—a recognition that reflected both his talent and sportsmanship.

Following graduation, Jack proudly served his country achieving the rank of Captain in the United States Marine Corps, Judge Advocate General Division. His commitment to service and discipline shaped the rest of his life, both personally and professionally.

Jack’s life was driven by his faith, a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Cumming. His spiritual life was nurtured and strengthened through close bonds in the Unity Sunday School Connect group, which became his spiritual family.

In 1967, Jack married the love of his life, LaRose Powell Manton. Together, they built a home rooted in love, faith, and purpose, raising three sons—Jason (married to Megan), Jonathan, and Jed. Jack took immense pride in their lives and accomplishments. Of all his many successes, none mattered more to him than those of his family.

Jack had a long and distinguished legal career and was also a passionate entrepreneur and small business owner.

His love for sports also led him into officiating, where he became a college basketball referee and served as Commissioner of Officials for the Sun Belt Conference. He officiated for the SEC and ACC and was honored to represent the U.S. at the World University Games in Bulgaria. He also traveled to military bases throughout Europe with an all-star group of college coaches conducting basketball clinics for troops and officials.

Many remember him from his time as a sports agent representing high-profile athletes across Georgia and the nation. Yet it was the enduring friendships—with players like Foots Walker and Russ Schoene—that he treasured most.

As Jack’s family grew, his priorities shifted naturally. He stepped away from the world of sports with joy and purpose, devoting himself to coaching his sons and celebrating their achievements. His grandchildren—Scotton, JP, and Ella—were the light of his life. Whether watching the boys play ball or receiving a hug or drawing from Ella, being “Pops” brought Jack his greatest joy.

Jack’s love for his community was evident in his service on the Board of Directors for the Forsyth County chapter of Habitat for Humanity. He believed deeply in giving back and was always willing to lend his time, wisdom, and heart to causes that uplifted others. Jack knew no stranger.

His friendships ran deep, especially with his golf companions at Lanier Golf Club. Together they shared unforgettable experiences, traveled the world, and celebrated many rounds—Jack even achieving six holes-in-one along the way.

Jack was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Manton, father Richard Manton and his brother, Dick Manton. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, LaRose; his sons Jason (Megan), Jonathan, and Jed; and his grandchildren Scotton, JP, and Ella.

A man of faith, character, and quiet strength, Jack’s legacy lives on through the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
