Obituary

John Michael Owen passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at home following a brave journey facing cancer. He was surrounded by the love of family and friends. He was 63 years old. Mike was a devoted father, husband, brother and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Mike was born in Rome, Georgia on December 4, 1962, to James Creston Owen, Sr. and Charlotte Culp Owen.

He is survived by his parents, his loving children John Michael Owen Jr. (Chloe) and Lauren Elizabeth Owen and his former wife, Lucy Ramstadius Owen; his siblings, Jim Owen, Jr., Ellen Owen Bailey and Carol Owen Cohen (Dave); Mike is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Jayce Owen(Carolyn), Michaela Manning (Cam), Ross Bailey (Janice), Caden Bailey (Carsen), Davis Bailey, Sam and Jack Cohen; a great nephew and niece and special extended family Connie and Henry Pollitz, Shannon Kingsley (Nate), Allie, Hank and Charlie Bartelski. Mike is also remembered by numerous cousins and extended family around the globe.

A gifted athlete, Mike was a proud Coosa Eagle graduating in 1980. He excelled in both football and basketball and was voted by his classmates as Mr. Coosa High School. He attended Jacksonville State as a collegiate athlete, before transferring to Shorter College to finish his degree in Business Administration. Mike spent his working years in the pharmaceutical industry as a District Manager for various companies spanning three decades. Upon retirement he worked for Bass Pro Shops and Chick-fil-A as a Supply Manager, where he fostered and nurtured mentorships with his younger colleagues. Mike was known and respected for his work ethic, sense of humor, and love for family and friends.

Beyond his professional life, Mike was a family man who took immense joy watching his children play soccer and football as well as supporting his nieces and nephews in their activities. Mike wholeheartedly embraced fatherhood, and the closeness he shared with his children stood as a testament to his love and dedication. He proudly cheered his son on during his football career at Lenoir-Rhyne University and boasted often about his daughter’s academic achievements at The University of South Carolina. Mike was a lifelong Georgia Tech fan, rarely missing a game. He found joy in the many Georgia Tech Saturdays spent with his children, brother, father, and friends. Among many cherished family traditions, he especially treasured the family’s annual trip to New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Mike’s legacy is one of unconditional love, hard work, empathy, and gratitude. He was devoted to those he loved, notably to his dogs, Sydney and Finley. Mike was inherently altruistic, always being the first to offer a kind word and helping hand or a joke to make you smile. His influence shaped all who knew him, by leading with grace and kindness. His dignity and strength throughout his life were inspiring to the end. Mike found comfort in the support of his family and his unwavering faith. His presence in our daily lives will be immeasurably missed and we take comfort in the many memories we share.

Mike will be honored at a private family service. In addition, a public Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

The family would like to thank Capstone Hospice for their incredible care during Mike’s illness.
