Josephine Frances Hendrick Helvey

Josephine (“Jo”) Helvey passed away peacefully in the company of loved ones at her home in Milton, Georgia, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. She was 99 years old. Known to most as Jo, she lived a long life devoted to her family, especially her three boys.

Jo was born in Roanoke, Virginia on February 5, 1927, and grew up in and around the small town of Vinton, Virginia. A graduate of William Byrd High School, she attended Roanoke College before marrying Henry Helvey, Jr., and starting their family. She was completely devoted to her life as a wife and mother. Jo provided support for each of her boys as they grew into the men they are today. Whether it was driving them to event after event… baseball practice, wrestling matches, the swimming pool… or setting them up for their college journeys, she was always there for them. There was no end to her attention and generosity.

Jo had a wicked wit and infectious laugh. Known as a strict but loving disciplinarian, this attitude was not limited to her own children. In fact, for those who befriended her sons, she was known as The Outlaw Josey Wales (taken from the 1976 Clint Eastwood movie of the same name). She did not tolerate foolishness well and did not hesitate to apply corrections to ‘all her kids’ as needed. At the same time, she was so loved by her children’s friends that they would ask about her over the years, and many stayed in touch with her throughout her life. She will be missed by all who knew her. And, although her last years were less ‘social’, her conversations and reminiscing will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her sons, Granger Helvey (Carey), Richmond, VA; Don Helvey (Blair), Cumming, GA; Mike Helvey (Brandi), Milton, GA; six grandchildren; three-great grandchildren; sisters Betty Rhodes and Linda Hilton; cousin Patty Swortzel; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry G. Helvey, Jr.; parents Luther R. and Mabel S. Hendrick, brother Buddy Hendrick; and granddaughter Summer Barrow.

A private family celebration of life will be planned in the future.
