Kay Elizabeth Distel, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 81 years old.
Kay was a woman whose life was defined by devotion—to her family, her friends, and the simple joys that made every day meaningful. She shared an enduring love story with her husband, Jerome Phillips Distel, with whom she was just days away from celebrating their 59th wedding anniversary. Their marriage was a testament to partnership, laughter, and unwavering commitment.
She was a proud and loving mother to her four daughters: Leigh Ann Graham (John Graham), Carolyn Distel, Elizabeth Keith, and Erin Murtagh (Stephen Murtagh). Kay’s greatest joy came from her growing family, including her eight cherished grandchildren: Austin Distel (Paige Distel), Kaylee Murtagh, Maxwell Deisch, Kathryn Keith, Madeleine Deisch, Hannah Keith, Addison Murtagh, and Colin Murtagh. She was especially excited and filled with anticipation for the arrival of her first great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lt. Colonel Leo Butch and Lorena Butch, and her brother, Charles Butch. Kay is also survived by her sister, Patricia Fernandez (Joe Fernandez), with whom she shared a lifelong bond.
Kay found happiness in the everyday moments—tending to her garden and watching the birds, gathering with loved ones during the holidays, playing bridge with friends, spoiling her precious kitty Princess, and enjoying her favorite crime shows. Kay was notorious for her competitive streak and Yahtzee skills. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and welcome to all. Kay prided herself on creating the home where all the girls and their friends had a safe haven.
Those who knew Kay will remember her gentle presence, her strength, her sense of humor, and the deep love she extended to all around her. Her legacy lives on through the family she nurtured and the countless memories she created.
She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
