John Lawrence Hughes, Jr. (Larry) born November 12, 1947, in Cumming, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of family at his residence in Dawsonville, Georgia on May 5, 2026.
Larry was the beloved son of John Lawrence Hughes, Sr. and Edria Dooley Hughes. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a member of the 9th Infantry Division and was a recipient of the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice in service to our nation.
Following his military service, Larry worked as an electrician, where he was respected for his skill, dependability, and strong work ethic. In addition to his trade, Larry will be remembered for his ability to build and fix just about anything. Whether he was working on projects around the house that he and Myra built together, or lending a hand to family with small repairs and improvements, Larry’s practical knowledge and steady hands were always valued and appreciated. He was known for always being willing to lend a helping hand and took pride in caring for his family and friends.
Larry enjoyed many simple pleasures in life. He loved gardening, working on and collecting cars, and tinkering with just about anything he could get his hands on. He was always on the move and enjoyed hunting for treasures. One of his greatest joys was camping with family and spending time with those he loved most. He treasured the friendships he maintained over the years, especially keeping in touch with his fellow veterans from the 9th Infantry Division and the many friends he made throughout the Piedmont community in Cumming, Georgia.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Myra McGehee Hughes; daughter Denise Haney and her husband Steve; son John Hughes and his wife Lori; grandchildren MacKenzie Haney, Caroline Hughes, Jack Hughes, and Eliza Hughes; sister Linda Hardie; brother Alan Hughes; sister in law Deborah Buice and her husband Ronald; sister in law Daphne Reid and her husband Kenneth, brother in law Harland McGehee, and several nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered for his strength, cleverness, sense of humor, patriotism, and unwavering values. His life reflected dedication, resilience, and a deep love for family and friends. He leaves behind treasured memories that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
