Leon Leon Boling

James Leon Boling, age 96, a native and lifelong resident of Cumming, passed away Thursday, December 31, 2015. Leon Boling was born April 14, 1919 in Forsyth County, Georgia, as the third of six children to James Madison Boling and Lillie McFarland Boling. He attended Forsyth County public schools, Young Harris College (B.A.) The University of Georgia and Atlanta Law School (J.D.). He was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1946 and was a member of the Cumming/Forsyth County Bar Association and American Bar Association. He opened his single member general practice law firm in Cumming in 1947 serving many clients in the North Georgia area. His law firm grew from a one-man law practice to a much larger prominent firm now known as Boling Rice LLC. Mr. Boling received The Supreme Court Chief Justice Award for Community Service in 1998 and a certificate of 60 years of service from the State Bar of Georgia in 2006. His legal career always exemplified the highest standards of ethical conduct and professionalism. He always conducted himself in a courteous and civil manner and set a great example for younger lawyers who followed his path. Leon Boling was very active in his community and charitable organizations. He served as the first Chairman of the March of Dimes Campaign for Forsyth County and was one of the early organizers of Habitat for Humanity in Forsyth County. He served as a director of The United Way of Forsyth County and a director of Family Haven Social Services. He was one of the early members of Cumming Kiwanis Club serving as President for 1955-1956. He was an early organizer of Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce (now The Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce) and was the recipient of Honorary Membership in Recognition of Outstanding Service and Commitment to Community in February, 2000. He served for many years as the attorney for the Forsyth County School Board. In 1974 he joined several business men to organize the Forsyth County Bank where he served as a director and Chairman of the Board. He was a Co-Founder of Sawnee View Gardens, a perpetual care cemetery in Forsyth County. Mr. Boling established an endowment at the University of Georgia honoring his family members which funds an annual scholarship for a Forsyth County high school graduate attending the university. Leon Boling was an Honorary Member of the Gridiron Secret Society at the University of Georgia for more than forty years and was an avid Bulldawg fan, rarely missing a home game. "Grandaddy", as he was affectionately known by his grandchildren and great grandchildren, will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lois Boling; children, Linda Boling Byers, Laura Boling, Lera Boling Smith and Larry Boling; grandchild, Commander Robert L Byers (U.S.N) and a great grandson, James Sullivan. Survivors include his grandchildren, Diane Byers (widow of Robert L. Byers) of Hollywood MD, Amy L. Byers Stiglic (Thomas) of Johns Island, SC, Christopher A. Byers of Duluth, Courtney Smith of Evergreen, CO; Josephine (Jo) Boling Sullivan (Lee) of Athens, GA, Robert Hunt Boling of Charlotte, NC, James T. (Jay) Boling of Athens; great grandchildren, William Byers of Hollywood, MD, Caden Byers of Hollywood, MD, Alexander Stiglic of Johns Island, SC; care giver Patricia Williams; several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Memorial services will be held Friday, January 8, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ingram Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Sawnee View Memorial Gardens.
