Linda Appling Sumpter, age 86, of Cumming, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at Northside Hospital Forsyth after a lengthy illness.

Born on October 15, 1939, in Atlanta, Linda grew up in Sandy Springs and graduated from North Fulton High School, where she was active in Special Choir and the basketball team.

Linda devoted her life to education and learning. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from University of North Georgia, followed by both a Master’s degree and Education Specialist degree from Georgia State University. Over the course of a distinguished 33-year career, she served as both a teacher and school administrator, impacting countless students and colleagues with her dedication, leadership, and compassion.

Her excellence in education was recognized when she was named Teacher of the Year in Coweta County for 1974–1975. Linda also remained deeply connected to her alma mater, serving on the Alumni Council at the University of North Georgia for eight years and being honored as a Distinguished Alumna.

Outside of her professional life, Linda enjoyed many passions. She was an avid tennis player for over 40 years, loved reading and flower gardening, and was a proud member of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Luke Appling and Fay Dodd Appling; her son, Benjamin Steven Sumpter; and her sister, Carol Tribble.

She is survived by her son, Brett M. Sumpter (Patricia); and her beloved grandchildren, Zoey Sumpter and Jeremy Sumpter.

Linda will be remembered for her devotion to education, her love for family and friends, and the kindness and strength she shared throughout her life. Her legacy will continue through the many lives she touched.

Visitation will be held on Friday June 5th 2026 at 10:00 am at Cumming First United Methodist Church with funeral services following at 11:00 am.
Interment will take place afterwards at Sawnee View Gardens Mausoleum for immediate family.
