Nettie Marie Kent Burt (Marie) died peacefully at Lotus Village on June 20, 2025. Born on August 24, 1935, in Dawson County, GA she was the daughter of Lula Belle Brooks and Ferman Tarpley Kent. Marie grew up on her family’s farm and graduated from Tate High School.
She was the quintessential homemaker and an original homesteader before it was fashionable. For over a decade, she managed a 12,000-chicken egg-producing farm, a testament to her work ethic and pioneering spirit. She cultivated a thriving garden and preserved the fruits of her labor—green beans, corn, tomatoes, and vegetable soup—stocking her pantry with love and foresight. Her Southern cooking was legendary, with her dishes sought out at every church gathering with no leftovers for her children at home.
A gifted artist and craftswoman, Marie poured her creativity into sewing, painting, and quilting. Her hands stitched beautiful items from everyday clothes to her daughter’s wedding dress, elegant draperies, and treasured quilts for her grandchildren. From driving a school bus to managing offices, she left a lasting impression on those she served. Perhaps most cherished was her role as the favorite bus driver for the Cherokee High School band—entrusted with safely bringing them home time after time.
She was a loyal and active member of Macedonia Methodist Church for 60 years. She sang in the choir, led Vacation Bible School, taught Sunday school, and participated in the women’s ministry. Marie looked forward to Holbrook Camp meeting where she sang with the Holbrook Campground singers and hosted family and friends in their tent.
Each week, without fail, Marie baked a pound cake for her beloved husband J.M., a sweet ritual of love that spanned over 30 years. Marie enjoyed annual trips to Daytona Beach with family, tours with dear friends Peggy & Billy Sewell, and international journeys to Russia, Germany, England, and Israel. Her curiosity was evident as she meticulously researched her family's genealogy, contributing over 17,000 entries to Ancestry.com.
We are thankful for and inspired by her life as we carry her spirit with us. Marie is survived by her sons Jonathan Burt of Milton, GA and Noel (Beth) Burt of Henderson, NC; and her daughter Karen Missy (Hank) McCue of Woodstock, GA. Three cherished grandchildren are part of her legacy: Jordan McCue of Kennesaw, GA; Hannah Burt of Berea, KY; and Jacob Burt of Raleigh, NC. Also, one brother Michael (Kathy) Kent of Jasper, GA; a special sister-in-law Dora Arrendale of Dawsonville, GA and many nieces and nephews.
All are invited to a memorial service on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming. Family will receive guests at 10:00am with the service at 11:00am. To honor Marie’s vibrant spirit and sense of style, guests attending her memorial are invited to wear colorful attire.
The family expresses their appreciation to the staff at Lotus Village for their care and compassion of both their parents over the last two years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Macedonia Church in Marie’s memory. See link below.
