Mary Elizabeth Phillips “Betty”, age 85, passed into everlasting life in Heaven in the early morning hours of Saturday, December 3, 2022.
Betty was born in Chamblee, GA on September 28, 1937 to Roy and Mamie Ross (deceased), one of seven children. Betty grew up in the Doraville/Chamblee area and graduated from Chamblee High School. She was married to Albert Phillips, ‘JR’ (deceased) and they were blessed with 3 wonderful children; Donna Hicks (deceased), Lamar Phillips (Jane) and Ricky Phillips (deceased). She was also blessed with 3 grandchildren, Lauren Phillips, Alyssa Strunk (James) and Holli Paulie (Jeremy) and 2 great grandchildren, Hunter and Colton.
A highlight of her life was when she moved to North Carolina to live with her daughter after the passing of her husband in 1994. She loved her time with Donna and was by her side as a constant companion, up until Donna’s passing in 2012. She accompanied every doctor appointment and hospital stay during Donna’s battle with cancer, never leaving her side.
Betty suffered several tragedies in her life, but in true ‘Mary’ style, she never complained, never showed anger for anything that happened. As the Bible says about Mary, Jesus’ mother, she kept all the thoughts and pondered them in her heart. Betty had a special grace about her and a smile that would light up a room. She did not like to get angry with anyone, but if you tickled her feet…it was all over! She never wanted to bother anyone or make them go out of their way for her.
She was also preceded in death by her 3 brothers and their wives; Herbert (Betty Jo) Ross, JD (Myrna) Ross, James (Pat) Ross and 3 sisters, Roylene (Dan) Ward, Jean (Glen) Phillips, and Juanita South; in-laws, Albert, Sr. and Rena Phillips, William Phillips, Henry Phillips, Glen Phillips, Jackie Phillips.
She is also survived by brother-in-law, David South and sister-in-law, Peggy Niblett, plus numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and a host of friends.
The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses who took care of Betty during her stay at
Chestnut Ridge Nursing Home and the care shown to her by the wonderful ladies from Willowbrook Hospice.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 11, at 2:00 p.m. at the Ingram Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ray Gober and Mr. Chuck Phillips officiating. Interment will follow at North Atlanta Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
