Milford R. Wheeler Jr., known to family and friends as Mike, died peacefully on October 14, 2026, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was 93. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of 58 years, Billie Dean (Haley) Wheeler.
Mike’s love and devotion to Billie were central to his life. Their marriage was marked by deep affection, steadfast partnership, and a shared devotion to their family. He is survived by their daughters, Laurie Deanne Gay (Chris) and Valerie Elaine Romano (Michael), and their cherished grandsons, Evan Michael Romano and Mark Wheeler Romano, all of Atlanta, Georgia.
Born on February 14, 1933, in Nashville, Tennessee, Mike attended East Nashville High School and graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, he joined AT&T, beginning a career with the company that spanned his entire working life. He rose through the ranks, holding leadership roles in Chicago, Boston, and New York, where he spent most of his career.
Mike was deeply committed to his community and his Methodist faith. During the many years he and his family lived in Wyckoff, New Jersey, he was an active and dedicated member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he served as a lead usher. His commitment to the community extended beyond the church, as he served on the Wyckoff Library Board and enthusiastically supported his daughters’ many sports and extracurricular activities. A devoted Mason, he recently received his 65-year service award. As a Shriner, he volunteered his time and musical talents to help raise money for children’s burn hospitals.
A talented guitarist, Mike played country and western music with various groups throughout his life. His love of performing extended to his service in the U.S. Army, when he played at clubs in Paris. He served in several countries throughout Europe. Ever the engineer, he was also a skilled woodworker and model airplane builder. He enjoyed cheering on the Atlanta Braves and studying history, particularly World War II.
Mike spent his last few years at Somerby Senior Living, where he formed new friendships and found a welcoming community. Guided by faith throughout his life, he remained devoted to Bible study and worship services with Dunwoody United Methodist Church, drawing comfort and strength from both. He especially treasured being close to his daughters and grandsons during these years.
Quiet by nature, Mike expressed his love through his actions. His integrity, work ethic, generosity, and care for others were evident in the life he built and the relationships he nurtured. His memory will be cherished by the family, friends, and community to whom he gave so much.
