With hearts full of memories and love, we announce the gentle passing of Walter Michael Srubinski of Cumming, Georgia - formerly of Bethpage, New York - on May 14, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born on March 13, 1933, Walter was the proud son of first-generation Polish immigrants, the late Charles and Stefania (Syliwinska) Srubas. One of 13 children, he was raised in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York, where he developed a strong work ethic, a sense of independence, an appreciation for life’s simple joys, and a steadfast pride in his Polish heritage.
At a church dance in Greenpoint, Walter met the love of his life, Eileen Violet Fraczkowski. Their love story would span nearly 70 years, becoming the foundation to everything he held dear. After marrying in 1957, they raised three children together —Lydia, Donna, and Michael—while calling various places home across Connecticut and Long Island, New York. In his later years, Walter settled in Cumming, Georgia, where he continued to be surrounded by the warmth of family and the comfort of community.
Walter’s life was defined by service, strength, and spirited storytelling. He proudly served as a military policeman in the United States Air Force, stationed in Alaska, before continuing his life of public service with both the NYPD and the FDNY. His decades of dedication brought with them countless stories—some harrowing, many hilarious, and all shared with his signature glint of mischief. A natural jokester, Walter was always ready with a harmless prank or playful jab, especially for those he loved most.
Beyond his professional service, Walter was deeply dedicated to honoring and serving veterans through his volunteer work with organizations like the Northport VA, the VFW, the Polish Legion of American Veterans, and others. Every Memorial Day, Walter could be found marching in parades or handing out poppies in remembrance of those who served, a tradition that was as much a part of him as his humor and loyalty.
A believer in staying sharp both mentally and physically, Walter found joy in poker nights, rousing pool games, and fast-paced racquetball matches. Yet above all, his greatest joy and proudest accomplishment was his family—especially his beloved Eileen. Their unwavering love was the heartbeat of his life and a constant source of inspiration to everyone who knows them.
Walter’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those he cherished most: his loving wife, Eileen; his children, Lydia Philpot, Donna Fritz (Paul), and Michael Srubinski (Diana); those who endearingly called him Dziadzi - his grandchildren, Jennifer Walters (Luke), Kenneth Srubinski (Katie), Alina Thurman (Jeffrey), Casey Kimble (Gregory), Thomas Srubinski, and Zachary Srubinski; and his six great-grandchildren. He is also lovingly remembered by countless nieces and nephews, neighbors, and lifelong friends who became an extended family over the course of his remarkable 92 years.
A celebration of Walter’s life will be held at a later date, where friends and loved ones will gather to honor the extraordinary man he was. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in his memory to the Polish Legion of American Veterans or another organization that serves and supports veterans. To honor Walter is to honor what mattered most to him—supporting those who served.
Walter Srubinski was a man of service, laughter, loyalty, and deep, enduring love. He leaves behind a legacy as rich and full as the life he lived—a story that will be told for generations to come.
